Bring the authentic taste of Sri Lanka to your table with this classic Lunu Miris recipe. I cannot take any credit for this recipe, as it is the untouched, classic version of the dish itself. I can only thank the generation of original aunties from way back who perfected it, and the many aunties today who ensure it lives on in Sri Lankan households.
'Lunu Miris' (or 'salt chilli' in Sinhala) is an absolute classic within Sri Lankan cuisine. Traditionally ground on a stone miris gala, this raw relish packs an incredible immunity and digestion boost thanks to the fresh, metabolism-firing red chillies and raw onions.
Beyond its intense, vibrant flavour, Lunu Miris holds a special place in Sri Lankan culture. During the traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year, it is paired with rich, creamy milk rice (Kiribath). This combination beautifully symbolises life’s balance—accepting both the joys and the hardships of the year ahead with an open heart.
Enjoy this condiment with traditional milk rice, or any other savoury meal to add some spice and zest to your table. Share it with family and friends alike! #sharingiscaringandcaringisfun
