Where Do I Start?
Libby Gooneratne | JAN 14, 2025

This question comes up again and again, and while there may be many answers out there, there is one that holds true for us all of us. You CAN start from where you are, right here and right now ( “grow where you are planted” comes to mind). We don’t have to move mountains, all we have to do is decide the general direction we want to go and begin taking small steps each day that move us forward.
I know this may seem over simplified and, in practice MUCH easier said than done. But I also know IT IS POSSIBLE if we set the direction, break it down into bite size pieces and then give ourselves permission to go with the flow (and “let go”). Lean into each step with grace, self-respect and perhaps a tone of determination and grit to make it happen.
“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” By Vincent Van Gogh.
Remember you are never alone! Seek out a mentor, guide or even a template to help you on your way. Your path is yours and beautifully unique but there are many things in life we also have in common with others. Maybe there are tools, techniques or time with others which could be helpful to you finding your way.
The ebb and flow of life is real and none of us know what today may bring and which day is our last. There will always be days that even with the best intentions in the world our plans are not going to play out the way we want, and we have to completely “let go” of that too (and “roll with the punches” so to speak). The good news is every day is a new day and while we may not choose the external factors we are faced with, we do choose how we act and react.
Personally, sometimes when I do not know where to start, I simply start at the beginning (again and again) or look to find a very simple point of entry (i.e. barrier of least resistance). For me, it might be ground up (i.e. focus on foundations); top-down (i.e head, heart, action); core and stability (i.e. coming back to centre or reigniting core strength); or joyful and fun (i.e break out a sweat on a spin bike or clear space to dance to some upbeat tunes).
So, why not start a fresh and start from the here and now. Perhaps consider doing one thing that would benefit yourself today and one other thing that would benefit your future self. As time goes by, you will see while enjoying the benefits of the day itself, you also will start to enjoy the benefits gifted from past times in the here and now.
