“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain” — Vivian Greene.

I LOVE this quote. I truly believe nature has a way of teaching us so much about how to live well, if we are willing to listen and respond with a little play and practice. Rain speaks to us about the power of saucha (purity or cleanliness), seasons, and cycles. How we think about and relate to rain makes all the difference in our ability to use it for good and enhance our own wellbeing. It all comes down to whether we choose to dance with it or resist it.

Now, science confirms* that rain cleanses the air, alters brain chemistry, and provides psychological calm. I was amazed to learn that raindrops splitting as they hit the ground generate thousands of invisible negative ions (the good ions). When inhaled, these molecules increase oxygen flow to the brain. They instantly enhance alertness and relieve respiratory discomfort.

In addition, studies suggest** that the unique smell of rain, referred to as “petrichor,” helps to lower cortisol (stress hormones). At the same time, these fresh air shifts naturally support serotonin levels, stabilizing our mood, sleep, digestion, and overall sense of well-being.

The Perspective Shift: Blessing or Burden?

Depending on your unique cultural context, geography, and experiences, your initial perspective on “dancing with the rain” may feel like a blessing or a burden.

For those who know me well, I am not someone who likes the cold. In parts of the world where rain is coupled with freezing, icy winds and darkness, rain and me are not exactly best friends. However, on the flip side, in places where rain is coupled with a warm backdrop—providing relief and a gentle coolness to the day—well, rain and me suddenly become BFFs for life!

Our view on rain is therefore a blend of biology and perception. This explains why some people feel gloomy while others find it deeply soothing.

The Dual Nature of Rain

Rain is not always gentle, and nobody wants it to fall all the time—or never at all. Natural disasters reveal its destructive force when combined with wind or prolonged storms, while drought reminds us that without rain there is no life.

This is another one of nature’s lessons: to acknowledge both light and darkness, and to cultivate the desire to live in harmony and balance with both. The paradox is that rain holds both destruction and renewal. Our task is to honour both truths.

Setting Your Course

What if, regardless of your current situation, experiences, and viewpoint, you could set the course for how rain impacts you? What if you could enhance your own wellbeing in sync with the natural seasons and cycles of rain?

Are you willing to dance with the rain? Let’s explore four ways you can embrace the rain cycles and incorporate them into the art of living well.

1) Pause & Acknowledge: Seasons, Cycles & Saucha

Pausing to acknowledge the seasons of rain is a beautiful way to honour nature itself and your own life rhythms. Rain reminds us that life indeed moves in cycles. By noticing the arrival, presence, and departure of rain, you invite intentional moments of pause into your day—moments to reassess, restore balance, and cultivate gratitude.

Personally, I find that when I pause in the presence of rain, I start to believe that everything can be made clean again. Forgiveness and new beginnings suddenly feel more accessible than they did before. It acts as an open invitation to bring saucha into focus and look for ways to incorporate this into my day.

2) Absorb & Engage: Mind & Body Sensations

Give yourself permission to soak up all the sensations of rain. Allowing your whole body, mind, and spirit to feel connected with nature helps open your heart and mind to receive its benefits.

The sweet smell, the pitter-patter of droplets, the coolness in its touch, and the sight of nature being nourished all work together. They create physical changes within the body and offer a grounding experience unique to your exact moment in time.

Even in extremes, when rain feels fleeting or harsh, we can still observe its sheer power and strength in awe and wonder. This emphasizes its mystery, reminding us that some things in life are beyond our understanding—and that’s okay.

3) Write, Reflect & Resolve: Journaling & Gratitude

Using rainfall as a cue to journal, reflect, and lean into gratitude can help you make sense of your experiences. It highlights unhelpful patterns and nurtures restorative ones.

Rain can serve as a gentle reminder to pause and give thanks for the past and present. At the same time, it provides a peaceful backdrop to brainstorm pathways for a brighter future.

Rain directly stimulates creativity^ by eliminating mental distractions, inducing a relaxed brain state, and prompting deeper reflective thinking. This very helpful for critical thinking and decision-making.

4) Practice Mindfulness: Nature Walks, Meditation & Metaphors

Step outside during gentle showers to feel the cleansing effect (even with an umbrella in hand) or meditate near an open window. Rain clears the air of dust and pollen, making it easier to breathe while its sound reduces stress.

Rain sound is often referred to as “pink noise”^^ because of how its audio frequencies are distributed. It matches a specific mathematical pattern that the human brain perceives as deep, balanced, and soothing making it perfect to marry up with mindfulness practices.

Rain also works beautifully as a metaphor for letting go, saucha (cleansing), and renewal. You can integrate this as a mantra or sankalpa (a positive intention you set for yourself) in your yoga or mindfulness practices. Rain reminds us that all storms eventually pass. Just as showers give way to clear skies, challenges in life give way to renewal. This use of metaphor strengthens our ability to endure hardship, learn important lessons, and with peace of mind, move forward.

Closing Reflection

I continue to wonder at the power of rain—its ability to connect us to nature, to cleanse, to renew, and to soften our human edges. Rain offers several distinct, scientifically backed health benefits that positively impact our respiratory system, mental health, and overall wellbeing.

When we choose to dance with the rain, we choose to embrace, learn, and allow those benefits to flow into every area of life. To dance with the rain becomes to dance with life itself.

🌧️ So, next time it rains, I invite you to play and practice with one new ritual. Whether you pause to acknowledge it, write in a journal, or simply take a walk outside to listen to the sound of rain droplets—notice how it shifts your mood. Rain may surprise you with the gifts it carries.
