Holiday Burnout is Optional: How Rituals Changed the Way I Travel

Holidays — it’s something we dream about, research, plan for, and speak about so fondly. Yet so often, once our holidays are behind us, and while incredible memories remain, we can be left feeling exhausted, physically uncomfortable, and strangely flat.

Somewhere along the way, we started treating holidays as permission to completely abandon the habits that help us feel good. We swing from rigid routines into total chaos — late nights, zero movement, irregular eating, and overstimulation — only to come home feeling like we need a holiday from the holiday just to recover. Personally, while I love to travel, I reached a point where I no longer wanted holidays to create a rollercoaster effect for my health and wellbeing.

So what if holidays could leave you feeling better than before you left — bringing as much joy in returning to your projects, purpose, or day-to-day life as the holiday itself?

So that became the challenge I set myself — to do holidays differently and bring movement and wellness rituals into my holidays instead of leaving them behind. These days, travel leaves me feeling energised, inspired, and genuinely refreshed. Not because I’m strict or overly disciplined, but because I’ve found small rituals that support my body while still allowing space for indulgence, spontaneity, and joy.

A few tips that have helped me holiday well…

  • Move your body every day > Movement doesn’t need to mean a workout. Walk (or play a game of backyard cricket) after meals, swim in the ocean, hike, stretch, dance, find a corner of the room to practice yoga, or explore on foot. If you have a little one in tow, tag team with your partner or host. Make it happen. Your body will thank you — especially when travel routines, rich foods, and long periods of sitting kick in.

  • Share food and stay flexible > Try the dessert — just share it. Maybe skip a formal meal here and there to make space for a spontaneous local snack instead. Wellness isn’t about restriction; it’s about feeling good while fully experiencing where you are.

  • Start the day early > Open the windows. Watch the sunrise. Step outside before the noise of the day begins. Read. Write. Reflect. Indulge in slowly drinking your favourite warm beverage. Even 30 minutes of peace first thing in the morning can completely change the tone of your day.

  • Become a creature of the day > Explore, adventure, swim, wander, and connect during daylight hours. Late nights can be fun, but they feel far better as occasional highlights rather than daily events.

  • Join in instead of sitting out > If you’re staying with friends or family, be part of the process. Go to the markets. Walk to the local fruit shop. Help prepare meals. Shared movement and contribution often feel more fulfilling than being waited on constantly.

  • Create space for self > Travelling with kids, pets, or groups doesn’t mean you have to spend every minute together. Take turns. Swap responsibilities. Even one quiet hour alone for a walk, nap, reading session, or yoga and meditation practice can completely reset your nervous system.

I’ve come to learn that holidays can be periods where you fill your cup daily alongside adventure and fun. You can explore freely without abandoning the habits that help you thrive.

Your Challenge…

For your next holiday, choose just one ritual to play with, most days, and see the benefits for yourself, during and after. Remember, even small rituals create powerful shifts. The more you invest in your wellbeing now, the more fully you’ll be able to show up for all of life’s adventures.

Let’s Learn from Each Other…
