There are moments in life when we find ourselves in a liminal space—that feeling of being between two chapters, where the old is no longer quite right, but the new has not yet fully taken shape. It can feel uncomfortable. We may want to rush forward, find an answer or fill the space with something familiar. Yet sometimes these in-between seasons are exactly where we need to pause, reflect and listen.
Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman invites us to do just that. Through Dan's journey and his unusual mentor, Socrates, we are challenged to think differently about happiness, discipline, change and the way we respond to life.
My Personal Reflections
This book got me thinking about the many "worlds" we each inhabit. We can be a professional, parent, friend, caregiver, dreamer or creative—all within the same day. Sometimes we have found the right thing to channel our energy towards, but it simply isn't the right time yet.
That can be difficult to accept. We may feel that if something matters to us, we should be pursuing it now. But perhaps some chapters are about preparing, learning, caring for others or simply becoming ready for what comes next. I find the reminder "not now" doesn't necessarily mean "no." helpful.
Sometimes letting go is not giving up. It is recognising that we cannot do everything at once and allowing ourselves to be fully present with what this particular season of life is asking of us. Like nature preparing to shift its gears, perhaps we too need moments of stillness before our next chapter unfolds.
What Is Your Liminal Space Asking of You?
Take a moment to pause and reflect:
What season of life am I currently in?
Where am I directing most of my energy—who is it serving?
What might I need to let go of, even temporarily, to make space for what this chapter is asking of me?
Where could I replace "no" with "not now"?
Who are the people in my life who challenge, guide and encourage me to grow?
Perhaps it is helpful to consider that peace doesn't always come from having everything figured out or getting everything we want. Perhaps sometimes it comes from trusting the space between chapters, letting go of what we cannot carry right now, and becoming present enough to notice what is unfolding next.
